July 2017 meeting notes

Thanks to Robb and Southern Hills for hosting the Guild’s July meeting! I would also like to thank Jeff Drinkert for filling in as meeting leader. This 7th meeting of 2017 was attended by 41 including 31 members, 6 guests and 4 wee and not-so-wee brewers. We welcome Ken & Jen Knott and Steve Lusk as our newest members. Total paid and comp membership now stands at 103.

Just an FYI-Since our insurance bill has been paid, our bylaws state that any NEW members joining between now and year-end will be granted membership through the following year. So, if you know of anyone that’s been on the fence to join, this may be the incentive needed.

Meeting notes:

  • Next meeting is Sunday August 26th 2PM-7PM at Doug & Kelleigh’s. NOTE DATE CHANGE FROM THE 19TH.
    • Also note that Steve & Barbara have requested the September meeting be moved from 9/16 to 9/23…sorry Hokie fans.
  • Treasurer’s report-(Harry M)
    • Insurance premium was paid based on 100 members. Policy carries guild through 9/1/2018.
    • Present bank balance is $4536.88 as of 7/16/17.
  • Go Outside festival update-(Takumi S)
    • We will be able to brew and serve homebrew. Maybe we can get Big Willie on site and solicit a few corny kegs from members to serve from?
    • Plan will be to use brewing demo and promise of finished beer to pre-promote Learn to Homebrew day on Nov 4th.
  • SCBG 20th Anniversary planning update
    • Consensus seems to be for catered BBQ at BLBC on Sunday October 22nd, thanks Big Lick!
      • Carrie is coordinating with Ross and Rudy. Other contributors are welcome
      • Quotes being gathered…looks like pork butts will be more efficient from cost and time perspectives vs whole hog.
    • Charity event (Doug M)
      • Joe Hallock advised Chaos can host the charity event. Joe’s idea parallels what Doug M has been promoting is to have folks make a charity contribution in exchange for a wristband. The wristband entitles the wearer to taste our Chaos group brew creations. Not sure if it’s limited to our Chaos brew exclusively.
      • Timing still needs to be discussed.
    • Microfestivus update (Harry M)
      • Guild volunteers working any task(s) other than judging need to sign-up on the website and flag their status with the SCBG drop down.
    • Throwdown update & planning (Kathy M & Jason C)
      • Website is live
      • Jason is assisting Kathy, Matt is in charge of judge recruiting, Rudy is working on SWAG solicitation.
    • Camping outing POSTPONED (Skip)
      • Skip graciously offered to share his SML property with us for a camping outing August 5th. However, since interest was marginal, he would prefer to postpone the outing until September when there may be a chance of getting a larger turnout. Another date will be proposed.
    • Chaos group brew stories & creativity?
    • Open floor & other news.
      • Carrie was working on a guild tent and volunteers for the Salem Kegs & Barrels fest but there is not enough volunteers to satisfy the fest coordinator’s needs. It’s been dropped, maybe next year?
    • 50/50 drawing-(Harry M)
      • The $100 purse was split with John Merkwan.
