June 2018 meeting notes

It was a very warm June day, but the guild’s tent and the backyard foliage shaded us from the brutal heat. We had 22 members in attendance and one guest. As always, Rudy and Diane were wonderful hosts and accommodated everything we could possibly need. There’s always a nice selection of beers on tap in Rudy’s brewery. The basement worked perfectly for judging space as well. Thanks to Rudy and Diane for hosting!

Dues Reminder- If you have not paid dues for 2018, please do so. Diane will collect dues at the next meeting if you wish to pay cash or check. If you would prefer to use PayPal, simply send money to president@starcitybrewers.org. Choose the “Friends and Family” option to avoid a fee.

  • Next Meeting– Southern Hills Homebrew Supply! Thanks to Robb for hosting!
  • Treasurer’s Report– $5,084.94
  • Microfestivus Volunteers– If you are interested in volunteering for Microfestivus, please contact Harry. We have roughly 30 people already signed up for various shifts, but more are always needed.
  • Competitions
    • Several members entered the Bushels and Barrels competition. Of the guild members that entered, we had Allen Francis and Jesse Feldberg place 1st in the light category and Kyle Peer with honorable mention for the Lager category and 1st place in the “other” category. Congrats!
    • September 22nd– Blacksburg Brew Do, Sponsored by Ballast Point this year. The Guild did really well in this competition last year- we swept almost every category. Mike Czernicki won best in show last year and had his beer brewed earlier this month by Starr Hill in Roanoke. His beer should be on tap sometime in early fall. It would be exciting to have another guild member’s beer win best of show again this year!

      • Doug Moyer has stepped down from the Board of Directors, therefore we must hold an election for a new board member.
      • If you would like to run for election for the board, or would like to nominate someone for the board, please let Allen know.
    • Open Floor
      • Mike C. shared his experience brewing with Starr Hill with the group. He said it was a fun experience and they hope for his beer to be on tap in October. Starr Hill is repeating his process exactly for this beer. We look forward to sampling it soon!
      • Adam K. shared his idea from the May Community Building Meeting of a “Brew Night” event on a weekday night. His pitch was that someone leads and demonstrates the brewing process and each attendee gets to take home a gallon of wort (also perhaps bottling supplies). This will show brewers how easy the process can be, and a very small investment from ateendees.
