January 2010 Meeting Notes E-mail
Written by William Landry
Sunday, 24 January 2010

Our second meeting this month (technically) brought together a lively bunch of 23 members and 4 guests, Greg & Charlotte P., Daniel W., and John K. The meeting was held at the home of Harry M. Many thanks to Harry and Lynn for their hospitality. The accommodating set-up in a heated garage worked great.

Our newly appointed Treasurer Kevin C. gave us a financial report of $497.51, after paying for his samples, and before any dues paid at the meeting. A final tally of 33 paid members including those paid up till the time of the meeting gives us a great start to the year. A further reminder that dues should be paid at a rate of $20 for a family, or $15 for an individual was stated. As well as a reminder that anyone competing in club competitions must be paid in order to enter.

Meeting dates for the year are all spoken for. As follows:
February 27th at Chris M. (Tech Talk on off flavors)
March at John M. (Cream Ale Competition)
April at Chuck G. (APA Presentation and Tasting)
May 1  at James B. (Big Brew 2010)
June Beth D. (at the lake, APA Competition)
July and Aug will be decided by John S. and Doug M.
September Bryan S.
October Jeff F.
November Carrie and Justin C.
December Will L.

After a break, CyberDave lead us in the Cream Ale Presentation. Known for doing this style, Dave gave us a great lesson on preparing adjuncts. What to do and what not. Unfortunately the style is not available locally, except for Genesee Cream Ale. I think we all agreed it was a pretty bland "lawnmower" beer, at which point, Dave reminded us of the fact it used to be "Goat" beer, before the invention of the lawnmower. All in all I think we enjoyed Dave's homebrewed example much more, even if a touch out of style.

After another short break, Kevin C. gave us a presentation on the Russian Imperial Stout style. Unlike our normal process, we stepped up the timing of this presentation due to its need to age 6 to 12 months. So don't forget to start brewing yours soon for the December competition. To our surprise, Kevin had found a plethora of examples for our tastings. While it is safe to say the examples were all quite unique, the Old Rasputin seemed to get the best feedback overall.
